Fundamentally Sound, Holistic Violin Lessons in Houston
We prepare our violin students for orchestral playing, participation in contemporary ensembles, solo pursuits, and recreational music-making.The fundamentals of technique and music theory remain the same, and each of our students receives the same well-rounded education.
You or your child will learn how to properly hold the instrument, tune the strings, bow correctly, and navigate the fingerboard. You will also learn how to read notes in the treble and bass clefs, and you’ll be able to identify other elements of notation, like forte, piano, crescendos, decrescendos, and more.
As you progress in lessons, we’ll introduce vibrato and other more advanced techniques like extensions, contractions, pizzicato, and double stops. If you practice consistently, you’ll be playing advanced technique, harmonics and more before you know it.
Of course, all of our students leave their lessons as better musicians, not just violinists or cellists. You’ll understand key signatures, time signatures, intervals, chords, and learn a strong sense of rhythm.
Prepare For Auditions Or Other String Applications
Does your child have a Houston Youth Symphony audition coming up? We would be happy to help them learn contrasting solos, etudes, or orchestral excerpts that may be required in their audition. We can also work on sight reading, as that’s a common request in ensemble auditions.
Or are you an adult who would like to audition for the Houston Civic Symphony, a local chamber strings group, or even a country band? We’ll focus on that goal in your lessons, and we won’t make you play Samuel Barber literature on the violin if you’d prefer to focus on Blake Shelton.
Other bass, cello, viola, or violin students at Cixi Music Studio simply want to enjoy playing the violin at home on their own. This is a fantastic hobby to pursue, and we will give you the tools you’ll need to learn your favorite solos or songs at home.

Violin Lesson FAQs
What ages do you teach violin to?
We teach violin students of all ages. Young children, teenagers, and adults all take lessons at our Houston studio. Some students are just beginning, while others are preparing for auditions or advancing their technique after years of playing. Lessons are adapted to each age and experience level.
Do I need any experience before starting violin lessons?
No prior experience is needed. Many of our students are complete beginners when they start. We'll teach you how to hold the instrument correctly, produce your first sounds, and begin reading music. If you already play, we'll help you strengthen your technique and work toward your goals.
What styles of music can I learn on the violin?
You can learn classical, folk, pop, or even fiddle-style music. Some students prefer traditional string literature, while others want to play film scores or join a band. Let us know what you're interested in, and we'll help you build the skills to play it.
Can you help with Houston Youth Symphony auditions?
Yes. We help students prepare for Houston Youth Symphony, school orchestra seating auditions, and other ensemble opportunities. We can focus on scales, solo pieces, sight reading, or specific excerpts as required.
What's the difference between group and private violin lessons?
Group violin classes offer a fun and social environment, especially for young beginners. Private lessons are one-on-one and move at the student's individual pace. We're happy to help you decide which format is right for you or your child.
Will I need to buy or rent a violin before starting?
Yes. You'll need access to a properly sized violin for lessons and home practice. We can give you recommendations on where to rent or purchase an instrument locally or online. If you're unsure about sizing, we can help you choose the right fit.
What advanced techniques do you teach?
As students progress, we introduce skills like vibrato, shifting, harmonics, pizzicato, double stops, and more. We also help advanced violinists refine tone quality, speed, and interpretation. If you're preparing a difficult piece, we'll break it into manageable steps and guide you through it.
Do you also teach viola, cello, or bass?
Yes. In addition to violin, we offer lessons for viola, cello, and upright bass. Each of these instruments shares technique and theory fundamentals, but has its own physical approach and repertoire. Let us know which instrument you or your child would like to study.
What do I need to bring to my first violin lesson?
Bring your violin and bow if you already have one. If not, just let us know in advance. We'll provide sheet music, exercises, and everything else you need to get started. If you've played before, bring any music or method books you've used previously.
Can adults learn violin, or is it too late to start?
It's never too late to begin violin. We teach adult beginners, intermediate players, and returning musicians. Whether you want to play by ear, read music fluently, or enjoy a new creative outlet, we'll design a lesson plan that matches your goals and lifestyle.
Do you offer recital opportunities?
Yes. We hold student recitals each year, and students of all ages are welcome to perform. These events are supportive, relaxed, and fun. Recitals give you the chance to share what you've learned and connect with other members of the studio.
How often should I take violin lessons?
Most students take one lesson per week. This gives you enough time to practice and make steady progress. If you have a specific goal or timeline, we can discuss additional sessions or a more intensive schedule.
A Community-Inspired Atmosphere
Cixi Music Studio holds recitals for our students each year, and families and students always enjoy meeting each other and forming long-lasting relationships. We encourage our students to share the music they are learning with friends, family, and their peers here at the school, and as a result, we enjoy an encouraging and musical atmosphere.
